Using the keyboard tester

  1. Click the keyboard, then press every key. Tab leaves the test.
  2. Keys turn green once received and yellow while held.
  3. Pick your layout if the labels don’t match your keycaps, or try Detect in Chrome or Edge.

Reading the results

A key that stays grey never reached the browser. Last key shows the character and the physical key code; the code stays the same whatever layout your system uses. Held keys count once. Keys not drawn here, like media keys, still show up under Last key.

Fixes

If symbols don’t match the keycaps, check the input language in your OS. Try another USB port and turn off remapping software.

Fn, power and some system shortcuts are handled before the browser sees them, so they may never light up. If a normal letter key fails in other apps too, clean under the keycap or check the warranty.

FAQ

Does this keyboard tester work on Mac?

Yes. Command shows as Meta. Fn and some macOS shortcuts never reach the browser.

Why is my key showing a different letter?

The code follows the key’s position; the letter follows your OS layout. On a German keyboard, the key labelled Z sends KeyY.

Can I check key rollover?

Hold several keys and watch the Held count. It shows what the browser receives, which can be less than the keyboard supports.

Is what I type saved?

No. Nothing is stored or sent, and a reload clears it. Still, don’t type passwords into any test page.

Why does Tab move focus instead of lighting up?

So keyboard users can always leave the test. Tab is marked as tested as focus moves on.
